Research Findings Four outstanding initiatives and organisations have led us to the research which reinforces all we have written in The Right from the Start books for parents. • Roots of Empathy (www.rootsofempathy.org) This programme, used in Canada, also in Japan, and now being set up in the UK introduces parenthood education in primary schools from the age of 3. The long term aim is to improve parenting skills for the next generation of parents through building more respectful and caring relationships and reducing levels of disturbed and antisocial behaviour and violence. The culture of caring that results is transforming in its effect on the children, on their families, on their school and in the community. • PIPPIN Parents in Partnership Parent Infant Network (www.pippin.org.uk) PIPPIN provides outstanding teaching, support and training programmes in the UK, particularly for expectant and new parents. For example, a unique programme called Room for One More supports existing parents who are expecting another child and who, for whatever reason, found their previous experience of becoming a parent particularly stressful or difficult. • Circle of Security (www.circleofsecurity.org) Robert Marvin, Child-Parent Attachment Clinic, See the book “Changing the World, One Baby At A Time” by Larry Shook. See the Baby Bonding Video by Andrea Palpant & David Tanner (North by Northwest Productions). “Successful parenting is a principal key to the mental health of the next generation.” John Bowlby MD Other Sources There are many other excellent initiatives which have provided important research findings for Right from the Start. Many of them also provide exceptional publications and support programmes to help parents and teachers.
